On Friday, January 18, 2008, Governor Sonny Perdue released the following statement concerning the General Assembly's passage of the Statewide Water Plan: "I applaud both the Senate and the House for the passage of the Statewide Water Plan today. This process has been one of the most inclusive and transparent ones I have ever seen, with each stakeholder offered a seat at the table.  With this plan now in place, we have a framework from which to work to conserve, protect and sustain Georgia's precious water resources."

On November 8, 2007, the Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment, Committee of Transportation and Infrastructure, US House of Representatives, held a Hearing on legislation (H.R. 135) introduced by Georgia Congressman John Linder advocating the establishment of a National Water Commission to develop recommendations for a comprehensive water strategy to address our nation’s water needs. Pending Congressional funding authorization, GWRI intends to support the State Water Resources Research Program (104B) and the National Competitive Grants Program (104G) for FY 2008 (funded through the Department of the Interior), with tentative starting dates March 1, 2008, and September 1, 2008, respectively.  All faculty members or affiliates at institutions of higher learning in the State of Georgia are eligible and are invited to participate.  Proposals addressing drought issues are especially encouraged. Georgia EPD has declared a Level II drought response for the entire state. The rules for outdoor water use are as follows: (a) Odd-numbered addresses may water only on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, from 12 midnight to 10 AM; (b) Even-numbered and unnumbered addresses may water only on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, 12 midnight to 10 AM.  Read more...
