Project Experience:
1. "INFORM: Integrated Forecasting and Reservoir Management ", pending, sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Office of Global Programs.
Scope: This project aims at the development and demonstration of integrated systems for hydro-climatic forecasting and river basin management.
2. "A Decision Support Tool for the Nile Basin" Principal Investigator, sponsored by the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, Rome, Italy; 2000-2003.
Scope: This project developed an integrated decision support system aims at the development and transfer of modern river basin management technologies to the Nile Basin Countries.
3. "Water-Wise: An Applied Science and Technology Initiative of the GWRI to Support Comprehensive Water Resources Assessments, Planning, and Management in the Southeastern US", pending, sponsored by the State of Georgia.
Scope: This project aims at the development of state-of-the-science water resources technologies and their transfer to the federal and state agencies with environmental management responsibilities.
4. "Impacts of Biological Integrity Requirements on the Management of the Apalachicola- Chattahoochee-Flint (ACF) River Basin," sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency, Region IV, 9/1/2000 - 8/31/2001.
Scope: This project aims to incorporate and assess the impact of biological integrity requirements within the ACF decision support system. The assessment investigations will quantify the tradeoffs associated with ecological versus other basin water uses.
5. "A Decision Support System for the Western Sterea Hellas Reservoir System," sponsored by the Greek Ministry of Water Works and the Environment.
Scope: The purpose of this project was to develop a decision support system for Western Greece and assess the impacts of a proposed inter-basin transfer. The system is also being used by the Public Power Company to plan the operation of the hydropower system, 6/1/1997 - 12/31/1998.
6. "Demand and Climate Change Impacts for the Nile Basin," sponsored by the US State Department.
Scope: The project aimed at assessing the implications of climate and demand scenarios for the Nile Basin countries, 1/1/1999 – 3/31/2000.
7. "Integrative Water Resources Assessment and Management," joint project with the Hydrologic Research Center (San Diego, CA) and TVA, sponsored by NOAA/NASA.
Scope: Evaluation of integrated decision systems (including climate, meteorologic, hydrologic, and decision models with remote and on-site sensors) in real-time river basin management, 8/1/1999 - 7/31/2001.
8. "Information Systems for Water Resources Monitoring and Planning in the Lake Victoria region," sponsored by the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations.
Scope: The main objective of this project is to support development and application of technology that integrates ground hydrometeorological measurements, satellite-based monitoring, geographically referenced information systems, and a suite of hydrologic and decision models for the planning and management of Lake Victoria, 9/1/1997 - 6/30/1999.
9. "A Decision Support System for the ACF River Basin," sponsored by the City of LaGrange, USGS, and GWRI, 9/1/1998 – present.
Scope: Implementation of the Georgia Tech river basin planning system for the ACF/ACT river basins. Assessment of tradeoffs and impacts associated with various water allocation strategies.
10. "Improvements of Water Resources Management due to Improved Climate Forecasts," sponsored by National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration (NOAA), 6/1/1997 - 5/31/2000.
Scope: This is a demonstration project aiming to assess the value of climate predictions relative to various water resources uses. This assessment is conducted for a portion of the lower Colorado River.
11. "Lake Victoria Regulation for Hydropower Planning and Operation," sponsored by the Government of Uganda, 3/1/97 - 2/28/98.
Scope: (1) Development of a decision system for planning and operation of the hydroelectric facilities on the Victoria Nile.
12. "Integrated Forecasting and Control for the Iguacu River Basin in Southern Brazil," Joint Project with the Hydrologic Research Center in San Diego California, sponsored by the Brazilian Electrical Utility Industry (COPEL), 9/1/96 - 3/31/97.
Scope: (1) Development of a forecast-control scheme for the real time operation of the Foz do Areia reservoir for flood control and hydropower management.
13. "Monitoring, Forecasting, and simulation of the River Nile, Phase III", sponsored by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations-U.S. Agency for International Development (US AID), 6/1/97 - 8/31/99
Scope: (1) Extension of the Decision Support System to include all storage projects on the Nile River Basin (Blue, White, and Main Nile Tributaries), (2) detailed assessment of various operational strategies and operational conflicts, (3) climate change studies, (4) conjunctive use of surface and ground water.
14. "Monitoring, Forecasting, and simulation of the River Nile, Phase II-Extension" ,sponsored by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations-U.S. Agency for International Development (US AID), 10/1/95 - 8/31/96.
Scope: Extension of the Decision Support System to include all storage projects on the White Nile.
15. "Monitoring, Forecasting, and simulation of the River Nile, Phase II" , sponsored by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations-U.S. Agency for International Development (US AID), 7/1/94 - 8/31/95.
Scope: Development of a real-time decision support system for the High Aswan Dam using meteorological satellite data and on-site hydrologic measurements. Joint project with the US National Weather Service.
16. "Simulation vs. Optimization in Reservoir Management: Implications for the Comprehensive Study", sponsored by the Georgia Geological Survey, the Atlanta Regional Commission, and Georgia Power, 4/1/93 - 3/31/94.
Scope: Comparison of a reservoir simulation model (HEC-5) with Georgia Tech's reservoir control model for a real-world system. Comparison criteria include the value of dependable power capacity and energy generation, flood prevention, and drought management.
17. "A Decision Support System for the Nile River Basin", sponsored by the Bureau of Reclamation/U.S. Agency for International Development, 3/1/93 - 2/28/95.
Scope: Development and implementation of a computerized control scheme for the operations planning of the Equatorial Lakes in the Upper Nile.
18. "BOD Curve Fitting for the Savannah River", sponsored by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division, 5/92 ‑ 12/92.
Scope: Development and testing of a PC-based parameter estimation algorithm for BOD curve fitting. This procedure is a part of a general water quality data management system currently used by the Georgia E.P.D.
19. "Impacts of Global Warming on Reservoir Systems", joint project with Dr. K. P. Georgakakos, University of Iowa, sponsored by the U.S. Geological Survey/Department of the Interior, 9/1/90 - 8/31/92
Scope: This project (1) determines the impacts of global climatic change on the character of the watershed runoff process and (2) quantifies the impact of climatic change on reservoir system functions such as energy generation, flood control, water supply, and low flow augmentation.
20. "Optimal Regulation of Lake Lanier", sponsored by the Georgia Geological Survey and the Georgia Institute of Technology, 4/1/91 ‑ 3/31/92.
Scope: Development and testing of a PC-based control software for the operation of Lake Lanier/Buford Dam. Derivation of objective tradeoffs and optimal operational policies.
21. “Optimal Compensation Regulation for Three Gorges reservoir system”, sponsored by Yangtze River Commission, 1987-1990.
Scope: Investigate the impact of Three Gorges on the existing hydro system, and develop a compensation regulation plan for the future system.
22. “Reservoir Operation Model for Qingjing”, sponsored by Yangtze River Commission, 1988-1990.
Scope: Develop an operation support system for Qijiang reservoir.
23. “Energy Planning Model for National Natural Park-Suoxiyu Region”, sponsored by EEC corporation program, 1989.
Scope: Collect social and economic data and develop an energy planning model for national park Suoxiyu region.
