Service through the Georgia Water Resources Institute (GWRI):
Dr. Georgakakos’ service as GWRI Director (since July 1997) includes
- GWRI strategic planning;
- Meetings with and presentations to the GWRI Advisory Board consisting of the Directors of major water and environmental agencies;
- Coordination of the State and National Water Resources Institute funding program (i.e., solicitation of proposals statewide, coordination of reviews, selection of successful projects, management of project funding, quality review of project outputs, and information dissemination);
- Development of strategic research and technology transfer initiatives; (A major such initiative aims at bringing to bear relevant expert Groups from government, academia, and industry to (1) develop integrated water resources technologies and (2) transfer them to the agencies mandated to manage river basins in Georgia and the southeast. Such technologies aim to deploy modern monitoring and data acquisition systems to be used within an integrated modeling framework for drought, flood, water supply, energy, agricultural, and ecosystem assessment and management. Dr. Georgakakos has held a series of meetings with several agency and university groups and has developed a science and technology plan that has been presented to the Georgia Governor, several Congress persons, and the Georgia EPD. This multi-year initiative also includes the establishment and administration of an inter-disciplinary, inter-institutional academic program in water resources.)
- Establishment and administration of Technology Transfer and Continuing Education Programs; (Over the last three years, GWRI offered 16 new continuing education courses in Dam Safety, Hydrologic Design, Embankment Dam Design, Turbulence Modeling, Culvert Design, Decision Support System Technologies for River Basin Management, River Hydraulics and Bridge Scour, and Water Hammer. In all, these courses were attended by 206 individuals and generated approximately $350,000 of continuing education fees that were used to support GWRI personnel and various GWRI initiatives.)
- Information Dissemination; (Information dissemination is accomplished through conference and workshop organization, the GWRI Web site, reviews of state water policies and proposals, focused seminars to Federal and State Government Officials, and the sponsorship of state-wide awards.)
- Performance Evaluations; The Water Resources Centers in each state undergo five-year reviews by a national panel of experts. In the last five-year national evaluation of the water resources institutes, GWRI was recognized for its outstanding performance and contributions.
